Dual-layer DVDs: Getting what you paid for

I bought a spindle of cheap GC branded DVD+R DL disks from Fry’s yesterday.

Cheap is a relative word. The spindle of 25 disks cost me $19.99++. The usual price for branded disks was more than $30 for an equivalent spindle.

Unfortunately, none of the disks passed the post-write verification. I used both the Macbook’s built-in burner and an external USB burner and neither could successfully write to the disks.

Obviously, I could not ask for my money back since I had already “consumed” the disks.

Today, I went to Target and bought a box of Memorex DVD+R DL disks. They cost $7.99 for just 3 disks. I was able to use them fine to back up my Documents folder.

Lesson: don’t be cheap.
